WHO ARE WE?

‘We're a welcoming, friendly, inclusive, accessible, community-minded Club.  We're competitive at both junior and senior levels within Yorkshire and surrounding counties and we focus on junior development to achieve each players’ potential at the Huddersfield Otters and beyond’.

Huddersfield Otters ASC was formed in 1919 (a year before GB’s third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the sport!) and the town has had an active water polo community ever since. We are proud of our history and are truly inclusive – our Under 14 team includes 11 year old girls and our Senior mens team includes a 60+ year old man (with 50+ years at the Club).

We train and compete on Sundays and Tuesdays at the Stadium Pool in the 25 metre long, two metre deep pool, which is ideal for our sport. The facilities and equipment available give plenty of scope for the full range of coaching, training and competitive activities necessary for all ages and abilities. Any good swimmer, whether juniors from age 9/10 or adults of any age, is very welcome to come along and try the sport. Our team of coaches are as enthused by developing young talent from scratch as they are getting players recognised at regional and national level.

The Club has been Swimmark accredited for several years. This means that all key aspects of the Club (including safeguarding, coaching, data protection, processes and policies) meet Swim England standards – and are reviewed annually to ensure continuing compliance. All coaches and designated Committee members are fully DBS checked.

The Club competes at Under 14, Under 16 and Senior levels in the Wakefield and District League and games are played throughout the year, both home and away, and we also play friendly matches against other West Yorkshire clubs. We also compete in the Northern League, for the same age groups, where a number of clubs participate at the same venue on one day.

Finally, we are particularly proud that almost every year we have players that develop to regional representation level. We encourage dual Club membership to National League level where appropriate. A few juniors attain GB age group team membership and one current member, who started at Otters aged 12, was in the GB Men's 2012 Olympic squad!!
